Section 107 of U.S. Copyright Law provides a legal exception that allows limited use of copyrighted material for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. The determination of whether a specific use is “fair” is made on a case-by-case basis, by weighing four factors: the purpose of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount of the work used, and the effect of the use on the potential market for the original work.
